1. Social Networking and Benefit to ATC

Social networking is becoming a very big buzz word. I think it is a very interesting field and has a lot of information management issues that are useful to ATC and could also be used in proposals and leveraged by ATC. I personally am involved in severl now (have profiles) and have also used many of the theories in several past and current SBIR proposals. see information below for specifics

1.1. Proposals

  • ONR BAA 06-016 - 07-05-06 - CHORD - Wiki-DB and social network with AI agents - Lost
  • Navy SBIR N06-148 - 07-12-06 - ORCHID - Wiki-DB and social network with AI agents - unknown
  • Navy SBIR N06-159 - 07-12-06 - NISAD (ATC-NY with ATC) - Wiki-DB and social network with AI agents - unknown
  • OSD SBIR OSD06-IA2 - 10-13-06 - SCHISM - AI agents in a social network for automatically classifying documents and data - submitting

1.2. LinkedIn

http://www.linkedin.com
I (BenBurnett) have got an active profile on LinkedIn and through it have gained letters of support from Dr. Vasant Honavar at Iowa State University for 3 SBIRS during the 2006.2 round of proposals, and ATC gave Dr. Honavar a support letter for a project being worked on at ISU trying to start a new institute at ISU.

My profile is at: http://www.linkedin.com/in/benburnett

I currently have 71 connections, of which 24 are contacts relating directly to work at ATC. at least 14 past and current ATC/ATC-NY employees have LinkedIn profiles.

I strongly beleive that this type of social networking can be very beneficial to our SBIR work at ATC.

other benefits of LinkedIn is that it integrates nicely with Outlook through a toolbar if you'd like to upload your contacts and find people already in LinkedIn that you know already. You control who gets invited, not the site, so you can use it to SPAM or not, it is up to you... the site monitors for SPAM users and has been known to remove users abilities at times for punishment.

joining is free, but there are pay-for services which you can upgrade to.

1.3. Plaxo - contact management

http://www.plaxo.com
This is a site that allows you to keep a shared address book if you'd like to share the same address list between multiple machines (home and work, I use it to share addresses, calendars, notes between 3 computers) It also allows you to link to other people in your address book so when they update their contact info it automatically updates your entries. This is very nice if you have a large address book and also want current info on people. of course it only works for users who also use plaxo, but I've found it very nice.

1.4. Others

  • Facebook - Just opened to everyone, little professional value
  • MySpace? - no to very little professional value
  • Ecademy - large professional value, very expensive, has a free profile ability I think
  • many others...

1.5. Misc
